En mai 2000, la Chambre installait une Commission d’enquête parlementaire afin d’évaluer la responsabilité éventuelle des autorités politiques belges dans l’assassinat de l’ex-premier ministre congolais Patrice Lumumba. Fait sans précédent en pareil cadre, quatre experts furent chargés d’apporter leur concours à ce délicat exercice d’investigation historique. L’un d’entre eux éclaire ici d’un regard personnel le travail de la Commission, ainsi que ses enjeux historiographiques, médiatiques et politiques. L’occasion d’une réflexion, plus générale, sur le rôle de l’historien dans la Cité.
Docteur en histoire, spécialiste des processus de construction de la mémoire, Philippe Raxhon enseigne à l’Université de Liège. On lui doit, parmi d’autres ouvrages, La mémoire de la Révolution française. Entre Liège et Wallonie (Labor, 1996) et Les Territoires de la Mémoire. Le Catalogue (Crédit communal, 1999). Il fut l’un des quatre experts de la Commission d’enquête parlementaire Lumumba et membre fondateur de l’association Les Territoires de la Mémoire.
